Means testing could be scrapped
A proposal to allow all of Jersey's States members to claim pay of about 40,000 each will cost more than 500,000, according to island finance chiefs.

States members are discussing whether to abolish means testing on their pay.

If they agree, all politicians will be able to claim the same amount, no matter what their other earnings are.

But the Finance and Economics Committee says they do not have the funds under the cash limits set for 2004 to meet the extra outlay.

If the proposal is approved, the committee says it will have to fund the excess from the pay and pensions contingency fund.
