Warning over fake charity 'scam'

Isle of Man residents are being warned about a fake charity which is believed to be involved in a scam.

LoveChildren Charity & Orphanage, which claims to be Douglas-based, has sent out letters looking for a beneficiary for its founder's £7m estate.

But its address is a vacant office, its phone number does not exist and the charity is not registered.

The Financial Supervision Commission (FSC) believes the letters are an attempt at an advance fee fraud.

It could also be an attempt at gaining personal data from the recipient in order to steal their identity, the FSC said.

In advance fee frauds, individuals are asked to provide their bank details for the deposit of unclaimed funds.

Victims are typically asked to pay an amount of money as fees or commission on the transaction.

Anyone who has paid out funds to the charity should contact their local police fraud unit, the FSC said.
