Youth Games to 'showcase' island

The youth games will be held on the island in 2011

The 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games will be a showcase for the Isle of Man, the tourism minister has said.

Martyn Quayle made the comments at the House of Keys on Tuesday, as he answered questions posed by North Douglas MHK Bill Henderson.

Discussions on a possible multi-million pound refurbishment of the Bowl in King George V Park are understood to be ongoing with owners, Douglas Council.

Mr Quayle said there was a chance work could be carried out before the games.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the Isle of Man to take its place in the world league of nations," he said.

"In fact, the 71 countries of the Commonwealth will be represented here in the Isle of Man we understand.

"That would be a great opportunity for the island to showcase itself as a wonderful place to visit and do business, and to also maximise the opportunities for the people visiting the island."

The Bowl is to host the rugby sevens during the sporting competition.
