Manx cycling sensation Mark Cavendish will "do the Isle of Man proud" at the Olympic Games, the chief minister says.

Tony Brown was adding his voice to the congratulations heaped on the athlete after his victory in stage six of the Tour de France on Wednesday.

Since the sprint finish Cavendish, who was born in the Isle of Man, has been tipped for gold in Beijing.

"I think we can all be extremely proud of him and he can be proud of his achievements himself," said Mr Brown.

He added: "He's a fantastic sportsman and a very pleasant person and a great ambassador for the Isle of Man.

"Watch out for the Olympic Games - I'm sure he'll do us proud.

"We've got two people who have been selected, I think, to go to the Olympic Games and for an island of only 80,000 people that is a fantastic achievement.

"I wish them well and I'm sure the whole of the Isle of Man will be behind them."
