Construction work has started on the 13m regeneration of Castletown town centre on the Isle of Man.

The start of the work on Callow's Yard was described as a "significant milestone" by project director, Roy Tilleard, on Monday.

Demolition work has already taken place at the site, between Malew and Arbory Streets, and now groundwork will be carried out in the next 15 weeks.

Mr Tilleard said the firm was on track for its Autumn 2008 completion date.

Workforce increase

Most of the Callow's Yard site has been derelict for a number of years and the construction was welcomed in the town, Callow's Yard Developments said.

Twenty-seven homes will be built along with nine commercial developments in the scheme.

The company is seeking to more than double its construction workforce as it pushes towards getting some houses ready for Autumn 2007.

"I personally can't wait for the project to be complete. It's certainly something that I've put a lot of time and effort in to," said Mr Tilleard.

"It's everybody's wish that this is completed and we end up with a town centre with more people living in it and a shopping experience."
