 | A basking shark spotted off Mull
|
Twenty-five sightings of basking sharks have been reported in the waters around the Isle of Man. Most of the sharks were spotted around the south of the island around Port Erin, Port St Mary, the Calf and Spanish Head.
Anyone who sees a shark in the island's waters over the next few months are asked to report them to the Manx Wildlife Trust.
Latest sightings are listed online at www.isleofman.com.
The sharks are most commonly seen between May and September.
They have the scientific name Cetorhinus maximus and are the second biggest fish in the world, the largest being the tropical whale shark.
They are harmless and feed off plankton.
The number of sightings has shot up over the last few years and experts believe climate change is a factor, with the sharks following plankton from warmer seas.
