Schoolgirls to get 'cancer jab'
HPV virus
The HPV virus can cause cancer
Vaccinations against the virus which causes cervical cancer will be offered to teenage girls in Guernsey.

The island is joining the UK in a scheme aimed at preventing Year eight girls from getting the cancer in future years.

Experts say most cases are caused by longstanding infection with certain strains of the human papilloma virus, which can be sexually transmitted.

The vaccine offers the opportunity of preventing the cancer developing.

A series of meetings between primary care, the hospital pharmacy and school nurses have taken place in Guernsey.

While the scheme will start at the beginning of the autumn term, it is hoped to roll out the scheme to all girls up to the age of 18.
