P-plates considered for drivers

The consultation document is available from the States
Newly qualified drivers could be more easily identifiable on the roads of Guernsey in future, under legislation being considered by the States.

The Environment Department has issued a consultation document outlining its ideas for probationary drivers.

Measures being considered include displaying P-plates for 12 months, and compulsory seatbelts for passengers.

Guernsey Police, St John Ambulance and safety charity STEPS have also been consulted by the States.

Other restrictions mentioned in the document, although not recommended by the department, include reducing the speed limit for new drivers, restricting the number of hours on the road, restricting passenger numbers and having a second driving test at the end of the probationary period.

Environment Minister David de Lisle said members of the public, motoring organisations and other interested parties could give their views to the consultation document by 23 November.

"We'd really like to hear about any concerns the public feel need to be introduced," he told BBC News.

The consultation document and response forms are available from the department.
