Business 'key to diverse economy'

Support for a new tax system should attract more businesses
The key to attracting more non-finance companies to Guernsey is to ensure the business environment is right, a States minister has said.

It follows a States amendment last week, directing the policy council to take practical steps to encourage more diverse industries.

Commerce and Employment Minister Stuart Falla said there were clear advantages to having a diverse economy.

But he said it was better to create conditions to attract entrepreneurs.

Deputy Falla listed companies like Specsavers, Healthspan and Healthy Direct as examples of businesses which have come to the island and developed their ideas.

The minister said he believed the decision to support "zero-ten" would make the island more attractive to high net worth individuals.

A "zero-ten" system means some companies would pay 0% tax, while others would be taxed at 10%.
