Deputies raise tax hike concerns
Deputies have raised concerns about the impact on middle earners in Guernsey following a report into how to meet a multi-million pound tax shortfall.

Guernsey States is abolishing corporation tax in 2008 to keep the island competitive as an off-shore banking centre.

Proposals will also see increases to social security payments as well as indirect taxes on petrol and alcohol.

But some deputies want to soften the blow for taxpayers.

I am concerned we may be giving away too much in the way of corporation tax
Deputy Rhoderick Matthews

Deputy Al Brouard said: "I am concerned about the amount of burden on middle Guernsey.

"I want to sure that the companies that will be benefiting from zero corporation tax are still contributing to the local economy through tax on property or whatever."

Deputy Rhoderick Matthews is also considering placing amendments.

He said: "I believe we may be making some serious mistakes.

"I am concerned we may be giving away too much in the way of corporation tax.

"I don't know that it's necessary to reduce to zero for so many of the finance sector businesses."
