An island-wide opinion poll has begun to gauge people's views on constitutional reform in Sark. The governing body, the Chief Pleas, opted to hold the ballot over the future make-up of Sark's government after failing to decide on reforms.
Sark's 450 residents are being asked if they want the island's feudal system of government scrapped or adapted.
The Chief Pleas agreed to take account of the results if there is a 20% majority in favour of one option.
The poll, which will be carried out by telephone and post by the Electoral Reform Services, must show a minimum return of 60% of the papers despatched.
Papers have been sent to residents and there will be a follow-up reminder mailing on 29 August.
The poll closes on 6 September, after which the results will be announced.
The Channel Island of Sark is Europe's last feudal state and has to change its laws to comply with European human rights legislation.
Owners of the island's 40 tenements (divisions of land) currently have an automatic seat in government and islanders choose 12 people's deputies.
