Mixed waste ban call is rejected
Banning all mixed waste from Guernsey's last landfill site would lead to more fly-tipping and illegal bonfires, the island's Environment Department said.

The claim comes in response to calls for tougher action to restrict the type of rubbish accepted at Mont Cuet's tip.

Director of Island Waste Ltd Dan Hubert said mixed loads should not be accepted to ensure less went into landfill.

Minister Bernard Flouquet said no ban was needed because firms could take mixed loads elsewhere cheaper.

Environment minister Mr Flouquet added that some separation and recycling already took place at Mont Cuet.

The site has estimated eight years of landfill use left.
