Tidal energy could be used to replace petrol driven cars |
The water surrounding Alderney could provide all the energy needs of the island within 10 years with the use of tidal power generators. A panel reviewing alternative forms of power in the island is recommending a tidal energy commission is set up. Alderney is said to have the third strongest tidal currents in the world and it is hoped the island could tap into a free source of energy.
The panel's findings will be presented at a public meeting early next month.
It is thought tidal energy could also be used to power a desalination plant and replace the existing oil power station.
It could also be used to replace petrol with electrically driven cars.
