 Ten re-enactors in German uniforms will help fire the gun |
Part of Guernsey will echo to the sound of gunfire on Sunday as the Armouries fires a restored German coastal gun. The display at Battery Dollmann in Pleinmont was initially planned to take place earlier this year.
But it was postponed until a family of swallows nesting in an ammunition storage bunker had flown the nest.
The battery is one of several coastal gun positions installed by the German army and navy during the Occupation in World War II.
Dug out
The battery was equipped with captured French guns which were installed in circular pits on top of the headland.
When the island was liberated in 1945, the guns were scrapped and the pits backfilled.
In 1995, Guernsey Armouries recovered a similar gun from Jersey and the gun pit was dug out and restored.
On Sunday afternoon, 10 re-enactors in German uniform will be present at the site and the gun will be fired every hour between 1400 and 1700 BST.
