Minimum drinking age could rise

A change in law would bring Sark into line with the rest of the Bailiwick
The minimum age for drinking alcohol in Sark could be increased by two years.

Raising the minimum age from 16 to 18 is among a number of proposals put forward by the General Purposes and Finance Committee to the Chief Pleas.

If approved, it would bring Sark's liquor licensing laws into line with the rest of the Bailiwick.

Sark Deputy Paul Armorgie, who owns the Stocks Island Hotel, said he believed it was an important move as the law needed tidying up.

"It makes good sense, as 90% of any alcohol-related problems the island has had in the last few years have been drawn from that younger drinking age bracket, and, as a licensee on the island, I welcome it," he said.

"I also welcome the proposal to relax the licensing laws on Sark to allow cafes to serve alcohol with meals."
