Guernsey's barn owls appear to be bucking the trend and showing an increase in numbers. Barn owl boxes have been erected around the island to try to replace lost nesting sites for a number of years.
The action was taken after it was found the numbers of barn owls in Britain had plummeted by 95%.
Owl enthusiast Vic Froome said a nesting box scheme appeared to be working and it was also making it easier to monitor numbers.
"Over the past five or six years that I have been running this scheme we have got about 25 pairs we know of, but we have also got another 20-odd boxes where barn owls are seen very regularly," he said.
Of the UK's five species, the barn owl and short-eared owl are already of conservation concern.
The tawny owl and long-eared owl, though poorly monitored, are known to be in decline, and the little owl is susceptible to changes in farming.
