Island bucking UK library trend
People in library
129,000 was spent on reading materials in Guernsey last year
Guernsey is succeeding to buck a UK trend which has seen fewer people using public libraries.

A new report said visitor numbers have halved since 1984 and predicted people will stop using libraries in 20 years.

But these fears have been dismissed by Guernsey's Guille-Alles Library which has seen membership increase by 4% from 2002.

The number of under 18s becoming members is also increasing, with numbers up by 5.2%.

The library has also seen an increase in loans last year from previous years.

Guernsey Chief Librarian, Maggie Falla, says 129,000 was spent on reading materials last year.

Libri, which conducted the UK study, said collections are often old, incomplete or out of date and more people now buy books, rather than borrow them.
