Pedestrians 'at risk' on crossings
Zebra crossing
A pedestrian was hit by a car on a crossing two years ago
The safety of pedestrians in Guernsey is being put at risk until crossings are better marked, it has been claimed.

Calls have been made by the Guernsey Blind Association for improvements to the signage and lighting on all pedestrian crossings in the island.

President of the Traffic Committee, Deputy Pat Mellor, said an immediate review of pedestrian safety was long overdue.

But she said it was not a straightforward situation.

Narrow escapes

Complaints from islanders follow the death of a pedestrian two years ago.

Geoff Mourant was hit by a car on the crossing at the top of Track Lane two years ago.

His widow, Tina, is angry crossings have not been improved since.

Other residents have reported to the police of narrow escapes from being run over when using zebra crossings in other parts of Guernsey.

Deputy Mellor said the review was ongoing and the pedestrian safety group, STEPS, was working closely with the Traffic Committee.

But she said the situation was complicated, as some responsibility lay with the Parish Constables.
