Union calls for minimum wage
Coins
The Board of Industry has no solid proposals for wage legislation
A union leader in Guernsey is calling for the introduction of a minimum wage.

Peter Du Port, industrial organiser for the island's branch of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), said it was disgraceful there were no plans to introduce one.

Mr Du Port said the lack of action was unacceptable and by his calculations Guernsey needed a minimum wage of 6.83 an hour.

The Board of Industry said it would continue to keep a close eye on whether a minimum wage was needed.

Mr Du Port said he found it hard to understand the reason for the States' policy.

He said of the figure of 6.83 an hour: "There are a great many people in Guernsey on less than that.

"Undoubtedly, people on that sort of wage will struggle to survive in Guernsey. They certainly won't be able to house themselves adequately and will struggle to feed their families decently."

The Board of Industry said it is following the issue but that it had no plans for legislation in the near future.
