Tax rises call defeated
Amendments calling for tax rises in Guernsey's budget for 2004 have been thrown out.

Deputy Peter Roffey tabled three amendments, calling for an increase in indirect taxes on fuel, alcohol and motor tax.

If approved, the measures would have generated a further 400,000.

Proposals by Advisory and Finance call for a 3.5% rise in personal income tax allowances and an increase in tobacco duty.

Laurie Morgan, president of Advisory and Finance, felt the budget would have broad appeal.

He said: "This is another good news budget, especially for those on lower incomes as once again the committee has brought forward a budget which emphasises the commitment to careful, consistent and sustainable government."

Deputies Tony Webber and John Gollop drew up an alternative budget, but their proposals were thrown out.
