The move comes after Spanish security forces in the city of Huesca found a French car on Monday packed with 100kg (220lb) of explosives. The Spanish authorities said they believed the car bomb was going to be used by ETA. Police say it was the fourth car bomb of French origin discovered since ETA broke its 14-month truce last December. The increased security will be limited to the Basque region and nearby border crossings so as not to break European Union agreements on open frontiers. Tension ETA has been blamed for more than 800 deaths since its violent campaign for an independent Basque homeland began in 1968.
Two recent ones include the murders of Jose Maria Martin Carpena, a councillor from Spain's governing Popular Party, and a former Basque provincial governor, Juan Maria Jauregui. Meanwhile, several hundred people have held a peaceful remembrance service for a leading ETA member in the Spanish Basque town of Durango, in defiance of a government ban. The ETA commander, Patxi Rementeria, was killed along with three other ETA members earlier this month, when a bomb they were carrying went off. |
