The human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has accused police in Romania of failing to undertake adequate reforms, ten years after the overthrow of the Communist leader, Nicolae Ceausescu. In two newly released reports, Amnesty cited instances of police officers shooting and beating Romanian Gypsies suspected only of minor crimes, and of newly-established squads, known as emergency intervention units, ill-treating suspects.

It said police should be held to account if the government's reform agenda is to be taken seriously.

There's been no response yet from the Romanian authorities.
