Serbian opposition politicians are due to meet Montenegrin government leaders today, to discuss the Yugoslav federal elections scheduled for next month.

The Serbs wants the Montenegrin leadership to abandon its proposed boycott of the elections, and to answer yesterday's call by the United States to unite behind a single candidate against the Yugoslav President, Slobodan Milosevic.

The Montenegrins say the elections have been called under terms that favour Mr Milosevic and his supporters, and should not be recognised.

And on Monday, a senior government advisor, Miodrag Vukovic, said he expected Montenegro to stand by its plan. Montenegro is Serbia's junior partner in the Yugoslav Federation.
