Italian police in mafia drug and property crackdown

Italian police have made a series of arrests and seized millions of euros of assets in two separate operations targeting southern mafias.

At least 60 people suspected of selling drugs in Sicily were arrested in Palermo, including several minors.

Those arrested are accused of belonging to a drug smuggling network linking Sicily's Cosa Nostra, the Camorra clan and Spanish traffickers.

It follows the arrest of a drug dealer found with cocaine last year.

In a separate mafia operation in the southern Reggio Calabria region, property and assets were seized, including olive groves, farmland, flats, businesses and luxury cars, police said.

They said the assets seized were worth a total of 200m euros (£177m; $290m).

Police said the property, taken from near the town of San Luca, belonged to the two feuding clans of the 'Ndrangheta criminal network whose battle led to the killing of six people in Duisburg, Germany, in 2007.
