Tens of thousands of people have braved rainy downpours to gather at the Brandenburg Gate, for the climax of a day of celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall.
World leaders and dignitaries joined German Chancellor Angela Merkel as they made their way through the historic gate.
Former Polish President Lech Walesa pushed over the first of 1,000 giant foam dominoes, symbolising how Europe's communist regimes toppled one after the other.
The dominoes - hand painted in a graffiti style - fell along a 1.5km (0.9 mile) stretch of the wall's original path.
Despite the gloomy weather, a spectacular fireworks display lit up the Berlin sky, recreating the festive atmosphere that engulfed the city in 1989.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also attended the ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate, once on the fault line between East and West Berlin.
Earlier in the day, thousands of people gathered at the Bornholmer Strasse bridge, which was the first crossing to open on 9 November 1989.
Young and old celebrated the historic event, which ended 28 years of separation between East and West Germany.
The celebrations were echoed in several European cities - with a mock toppling staged in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia.
The tone was more peaceful in the south-western French city of Bordeaux, but no less inspirational.
In Rome, an installation at the famed Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna paid tribute to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The wall was given the cold treatment in London, where it was re-created from ice blocks just outside the German embassy.
