The trial of the former Bosnian Serb leader, Radovan Karadzic, is due to begin at the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague.
The charges against him include genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Mr Karadzic, who is acting as his own lawyer, has said he will boycott the proceedings because he has not been given enough time to prepare his defence.
Allan Little reports from The Hague.
