| Thursday, 13 July, 2000, 18:51 GMT 19:51 UK Boost for Corsican devolution ![]() Lionel Jospin's proposals have a new momentum By Hugh Schofield in Paris Corsican deputies have issued a cautious welcome to proposals by French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin that could lead to limited legislative powers being devolved to the island's assembly. The elected representatives worked late into the night on Wednesday in closed session to adopt a consensus reaction to the prime minister's reform package, designed to put an end to 25 years of separatist violence. The island's 51 regional deputies confounded expectations by eventually adopting a majority position broadly favourable to Mr Jospin's proposals, with only nine members dissenting.
It means that Mr Jospin's initiative, launched six months ago in the face of political stagnation and worsening violence on the island, has a new burst of momentum. But a backlash is looming over the prime minister's proposals. Many French politicians, and not just on the right wing opposition, say Mr Jospin's proposals are against the constitution. Former right-wing Interior Minister, Charles Pasqua, said Mr Jospin was playing with fire. "He has no idea where he risks ending up." |
