| Wednesday, 22 April, 1998, 10:10 GMT 11:10 UK UN warns of new AIDS epicentre in eastern Europe A United Nations report says that eastern Europe, together with Russia and Ukraine, faces a drastic upsurge in AIDS cases. The report says the number of people in the region being infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, has increased at least sixfold since 1994. The UN blames the rise on the growing injection of drugs by young people, and on un-protected sex. It says a new information campaign against AIDS will be targetted at the young people of eastern Europe.
