It is 20 years since the leader of the then-Soviet Union was greeted by huge crowds in the West German capital, Bonn.
Mr Gorbachev was seen as radically different from previous Russian leaders - and during the visit one little boy helped him cement this image.
Brian Hanrahan, who reported on the events of 1989, has returned to Bonn to reflect on their role in history.
