Pope Benedict XVI has continued his pilgrimage to the Holy Land with a visit to sites sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians.
He became the first pope to visit the Dome of the Rock, from where Muslims believe Muhammad rose to heaven and which is situated on a site holy to all three monotheistic religions.
According to Islamic custom, he removed his shoes to enter the mosque, and said the site reminded Jews, Muslims and Christians of the things they have in common.
He then visited the Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, one of the holiest sites in Judaism.
The Pope inserted a prayer in the cracks of the wall, as Jews have done for centuries, calling for peace for "the entire human family".
The papal entourage then moved to the Upper Room, the place where Christians believe Jesus took his final meal with his disciples before being crucified.
During prayers at the Latin Patriarchate church in Jerusalem's Old City, about 400 clergy and local Catholics sang in Latin, Arabic and Italian.
Greeted by a crowd of rapturous pilgrims, the Pope arrived in in the Kidron valley to celebrate his first Mass in the Holy Land.
