A desperate search for survivors is continuing in the mountain city of L'Aquila and nearby towns after buildings collapsed in the quake which struck in the middle of the night.
Over 20 people in the nearby village of Onna have been reported killed.
The BBC's Clive Myrie was one of the first television journalists to reach the village.
