An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale has struck in central Italy, about 60 miles (95km) north of Rome.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Italy, but usually occur in the southern part of the country.

Susan Potter from the US Geological Survey said it would probably have been felt across most of Italy as a light shaking.
