Tens of thousands of Georgians have converged on squares in city centres across Georgia to take part in rallies and protests against Russian military intervention in Georgia. People also took to the streets in Ukraine's capital, Kiev, and in Athens, London, New York and Ashod, Israel. Russian troops are still present in "security zones" on the edges of the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The protests are taking place as European leaders gather in Brussels for a crisis summit on the situation. Georgia has appealed to the West for support from its powerful neighbour who, in turn says it is protecting Russian citizens in the breakaway regions. The EU's foreign policy chief has announced the EU will send hundreds of ceasefire monitors to the country.
