Three soldiers and eight Kurdish rebels have died in clashes in eastern Turkey's Tunceli province, local officials say. Fighting flared up on Wednesday in the province, which is known as a hotbed of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) activity.
The PKK has been fighting for an ethnic homeland since 1984. More than 30,000 people have died in the conflict.
Turkey has been considering a military strike on PKK bases in Iraq. The EU and US regard the PKK as a terrorist group.
Turkey's Anatolia news agency says aircraft were involved in the Tunceli operation.
