The number of women MPs elected has doubled

Turkish newspapers welcome Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's resounding win in Sunday's general election, describing it as a "victory for democracy".

Commentators stress the electorate's will must be respected by those who are suspicious of the Islamist roots of Mr Erdogan's AK Party.

Others are also upbeat about the election of a moderate ethnic Kurdish party to parliament, as well as a strong showing for women candidates.

Voters made their decision. One in two people chose the Justice and Democratic Party (AKP). This is much more than just a success: it is one of the rare victories for multi-party politics in Turkey.

The elections have been a victory for democracy. A victory of the Turkish people, a victory of "the soul of civil society".

The votes Erdogan received show that he has been embraced by the people. Now everyone should accept that it would be illogical to regard the votes he received as only those of fundamentalists.

Everyone - even those who fear most the political Islamic roots of AKP - should take heed of Erdogan's victory. A democratic culture requires first and foremost respect for the ballot box.

Midnight warnings by the military and their efforts to make the judiciary a tool for politics have backfired.

The election of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) to parliament is a very important development for Turkey. Unless the DTP deputies are treated with enmity, this situation might become an opportunity to find a solution to the Kurdish issue.

Our Kurdish citizens both want to express their identity and reject terrorism and ethnic ultra-nationalism. That is why the DTP's votes have decreased.

Women have been amongst the successful groups to have emerged out of the elections. While there were 24 female MPs in the last parliament, now their number will be around 50, and that means a 100% increase.
