Demirel regrets fishing clash with Ukrainians

The Turkish President, Suleyman Demirel, has expressed his regret about the killing of a Turkish fisherman by Ukrainian coastguards in the Black Sea on Wednesday.

Mr Demirel described Ukraine as a good neighbour and said it was an isolated incident.

But Turkish fishermen have accused the Ukrainians of using excessive force after they opened fire on five Turkish trawlers, sinking one of them.

Ukraine says the fishermen were in its territorial waters and had ignored orders to stop.

The BBC Ankara Correspondent says dwindling fish stocks in the Black Sea means trawlers have to travel further from their own coastlines in search of a good catch.
