Larsen was in the Albanian border town of Kukes in April when he saw the wounded man coming towards him. "Suddenly, this man walked from the flood of people and I could see his eyes and bandages ... He couldn't talk. He was in some kind of trauma," the photographer said.

Pope John Paul II's visit to Maribor, Slovenia, provided the opportunity for Agence France Presse photographer Gabriel Bouys, to capture this image which won third prize in the Portraits Category.
Indian artillery guns were engulfed in smoke as fighting took place at Dras, north of Srinagar, during the ongoing struggle over Kashmir. The picture was taken by AP photographer Aijaz Rahi and won third prize in the Spot News Singles category.
First prize in the Nature and Environment category went to Danish photographer Tine Harden for this picture of wild horses in Galicia, north-west Spain.
This image of a US fighter breaking the sound barrier won first prize in the Science and Technology Singles category of the contest. |
