 Papon suffers from heart and kidney problems |
French Nazi collaborator Maurice Papon has undergone surgery to adjust his pacemaker after being admitted to hospital with heart problems. A lawyer for Papon, who is 96, said the operation went well.
Papon was the second-highest official in France's south-west Bordeaux region during the German wartime occupation.
In 1998, he was jailed for 10 years for helping to send about 1,500 French Jews to Nazi-run death camps during WWII. He was freed in 2002 because of his age.
His appeal for a retrial was rejected by France's highest court in June 2004.
Papon was taken to a clinic east of Paris last week.
"The operation went well and he is getting better, he is recovering steadily," his lawyer Francis Vuillemin said.
He is expected to remain under medical care for several days, Mr Vuillemin said.
Papon was released on medical grounds in 2002. Since then he has been living at his family home at Gretz-Armainvilliers, east of Paris.
