News image

The hijack of a Turkish Airlines plane with 68 people on board has ended without bloodshed.

The airliner, an Avro RJ 100, was en route from the southern town of Adana to the capital Ankara.

It was diverted to Diyarbakir in south-eastern Turkey. From there he wanted to fly on to Iran.

About 20 passengers were released shortly after landing.

The hijacker claimed he was carrying a bomb.

The man is reported to be a Turkish Cypriot. He is thought to have been acting on his own.

His motivation remains unclear. though at one stage he said he was acting on behalf of God.
