Teenagers who attacked a Tajik family in St Petersburg, leaving a girl aged nine dead, have been given jail terms of 18 months to five years. Seven defendants were found guilty of hooliganism and one was acquitted.
The jury found the case against the defendant also charged with killing Khursheda Sultonova unproven.
The jurors also ruled out prosecution claims that the attack in February in 2004 was ethnically motivated, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency reported.
Khursheda Sultonova died from multiple stab wounds and her father and nephew were injured in the attack.
Ethnic groups in Russia have raised concerns that the acquittal could provoke more attacks by racists who think they can act unpunished.
