More than 800 road accidents have been reported in Istanbul, Turkey

More than 100 people have died in Russia since Arctic cold swept across the country last week.

The freeze, which is forecast to last into Thursday, has claimed the lives of at least 60 people in Ukraine.

Temperatures have also plunged to minus 30C in the Baltic republics and Czech Republic. Snow has spread as far south as Istanbul and Athens.

In other developments:

• Frozen Georgia is still struggling with inadequate gas supplies after explosions damaged two key pipelines in southern Russia. Georgian TV said there were problems getting replacement gas from Azerbaijan and Russia had suspended repairs on the damaged pipelines.

• The number of deaths in Germany rose to eight on Wednesday after a couple's car plunged into a freezing river as they drove home from a party.

• Police in Poland said 14 people have died of exposure over the past 24 hours, and more than 1,000 schools have been shut.

• Bad weather led to a spate of road accidents in Turkey which claimed at least six lives, while flights and ferry services were disrupted.

• In Greece, more than 400 villages and towns were cut off after 36 hours of continuous snowfall.

• Many residents of the Romanian capital Bucharest were left without heating because of low gas pressure. The Romanian death toll from the cold snap has reached 16.
