Klebnikov was an outspoken critic of Russia's oligarchs |
Moscow police say they have detained two Chechen men suspected of involvement in the murder of the American journalist Paul Klebnikov. The editor of the Russian edition of Forbes magazine was shot dead in Moscow on 9 July, in what appeared to be a contract killing.
He was the first to publish a list of Russia's 100 wealthiest people - some of whom may have disliked publicity.
Klebnikov was shot and fatally wounded as he left his office one evening.
Last year he released a book based on conversations with a former Chechen separatist commander - and it did not cast his subject in a favourable light.
Gangland investigator
As an investigative journalist, Klebnikov made his name by focusing on the murky world of Russian business and gangster capitalism, the BBC's Sarah Rainsford reports from Moscow.
The murder of Klebnikov led to an international outcry. He was one of more than a dozen journalists to be killed in Russia, apparently in connection with their work, since President Vladimir Putin took office.
Russian media quoted police as saying they had arrested two men overnight "who may have been involved in Paul Klebnikov's death".
The two Chechen suspects had earlier taken at least one person hostage and police said they found a gun on them whose bullets' calibre matched those used to kill Klebnikov.
