The Spanish government wants to introduce wider bans |
The Spanish Parliament has banned smoking in its corridors in advance of a government plan for a smoking ban in all working places across Spain. Parliament is setting an example in a country filled with smoky restaurants, bars and coffee shops.
No-smoking zones are scarce in Spain, if not almost unheard of, and the pro-smoking lobby is famously tough.
Spain is one of the European Union's smokiest nations and studies show up to 40% of the population are hooked.
The number of tobacco-smoking teenagers and women is also on the rise.
There are mixed feelings about the government's proposal to ban smoking in all workplaces next year.
The parliamentary ban follows a lengthy spat between smoking and non-smoking MPs.
So how will Spain's nicotine addicted legislators now survive marathon debates in parliament?
Much of the Spanish media advise the pharmacies close by to stock up fast on nicotine patches, chewing gum and anti-stress remedies.
