UK skier killed in Alps avalanche
Mr Smout was staying at the resort of Tignes, in Val D'Isere
A British skier has been killed by an avalance in the French Alps, the Foreign Office has said.

Jonathan Smout, 34, was swept away while skiing at Val D'Isere with six others, including an instructor.

Local police said the group were skiing off-piste when they were caught in the avalanche. It is not known if anyone else was injured.

The Foreign Office said Mr Smout's family had been informed, but his address has not been released.

Mr Smout was staying at the resort of Tignes and the accident happened at an altitude of 2,200 metres.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We stand ready to provide the usual assistance for the next of kin."
