States approve discrimination plans
States of Guernsey
The proposals were submitted through the September billet
The first steps towards introducing anti-discrimination legislation have been taken in Guernsey's States.

Members passed an amendment from Deputy Jean Pritchard.

It called for Guernsey to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women at the earliest opportunity.

Members voted 25 to 23 in favour of the Advisory and Finance Committee's proposals.

'Real commitment'

However, Deputy Pritchard wants to ensure that Advisory and Finance is committed to ending discrimination.

She said: "We are squabbling about looking to put matters right on gender discrimination.

"States members should vote for the amendment because I don't think there is any real commitment to do this from Advisory and Finance."

However, during the debate Deputy Tony Webber said too much emphasis was being put on discrimination against women, when the legislation is designed to protect men as well.

He said: "With these proposals, let's get that to the subject of equal gender discrimination, rather than focussing on discrimination against women. Because what we don't want to have is something that is discriminating against men."

The Advisory and Finance Committee also proposed to introduce legislation on racially-motivated crime.

Guernsey island ratified the International Convention on the Elimination on all forms of Racial Discrimination in 1969, but until now there has been no specific legislation on racially-motivated crime.
