Car-free day gets in motion
Speeding car
The Traffic Committee hopes the week will reduce accident levels
Motorists in Guernsey are being encouraged to go without their cars on Monday.

Free buses are being provided for drivers in St Peter Port for "In Town Without My Car Day".

The event also marks the launch of Road Safety Week in Guernsey.

Traffic Committee president Deputy Pat Mellor said she hopes people will support the event in Guernsey and either get on the bus for free or use a bike or walk.

Road Safety Week will be the biggest initiative a Guernsey road safety group has undertaken so far.

The week will display a crashed car outside the town church, to illustrate the message "speed kills".

Pat Wisher, secretary of the Stop Traffic Endangering Pedestrian Safety (Steps) group, said it is not a new message, but the level of serious road accidents is on the increase in Guernsey and something has to be done.
