Oil washed up on beaches
Oil pollution
Signs have been put up warning people of the pollution
Jersey people are being warned about small amounts of oil being washed up on beaches in the island.

Signs have been put up on a number of beaches by Jersey's Public Services Department.

Over the last two or three months, small patches of oil have been found on Jersey's beaches, but in the last week or so it has increased.

Public Services says it is trying to keep people informed and has put up red signs in St Ouens Bay, St Brelades Bay and St Aubin's Bay.

Diggers used

Municipal Services director Chris Sampson said the oil was not coming up on every beach.

But he said his small team of beach cleaners was stretched and could not remove all the oil at the moment.

Normally the workers are able to clear the oil by hand, but with more being washed up, diggers are being used as well.

It is not clear where the oil is coming from, but it is thought one possible source is the oil tanker Prestige, which sank off the north west coast of Spain last year.
