Many nurses in the UK are now from overseas |
Fifteen nurses from India will start work in Guernsey in the autumn. They will be joined by 10 new recruits from the Philippines, making a total of 25 overseas nurses.
It is the first time that the Board of Health has looked to India to make up the nursing shortfall.
The nurses from Bombay will replace Filipinas whose contracts have expired.
All the overseas recruits will be on the basic salary for unqualified nurses in Guernsey until they complete a statutory conversion course.
Exploitation concerns
This usually takes a couple of months.
They will then be paid on the same scale as qualified nurses in Guernsey.
The Royal College of Nursing has expressed concern over the recruitment of overseas nurses.
They are worried about exploitation and depriving developing countries of skilled labour.
The president of the Board of Health, Deputy Peter Roffey, says he is satisfied Guernsey follows all the national guidelines for taking on non-UK staff.
