The Battle of Britain air display will go ahead as planned |
The RAF is investigating why one of its Red Arrow jets veered off the runway at Jersey Airport. The Hawk jet came off the runway when the display team was landing at lunchtime on Tuesday.
An RAF spokesman said a minor engineering fault could be to blame, but it seems likely the Red Arrow will stay in Jersey while it is repaired by RAF engineers.
Eyewitnesses say quick reflexes by the pilot, Flight Lieutenant Jez Griggs, meant the plane hit a gravel bank instead of hitting a nearby farmhouse.
Neither the pilot nor his engineer Corporal Harry Harrison were injured.
Alan Longlois, who was working nearby, says a gravel bank that had only been put there the day before stopped the plane tumbling down an embankment.
The RAF says the Lincolnshire-based Red Arrows will fly in Thursdays Battle of Britain Air display over Jersey and Guernsey as planned.
The team brings extra aircraft to its displays.
