Suspended sentences have been used in Guernsey for over 30 years |
Jersey courts could be allowed to give prison sentences to criminals without actually sending people to jail. There are plans to introduce suspended sentences in Jersey for the first time.
The sentences - where a person is sent to prison after being convicted but is jailed only if he or she re-offends during a period of time afterwards - have been used in the UK and Guernsey for over 30 years.
But Jersey's Legislation Committee, which has drawn up the plans, says suspended sentences would be useful for people who have committed a serious crime, but are of previous good character.
The Committee says a suspended sentence could also be used as a last chance for an offender, with the person serving it knowing another crime would likely see them behind bars.
The Committee says such sentences are used successfully in many other jurisdictions and there is no reason why they should not be extended to Jersey.
